Falcons Conference Champions with Win over Delavan-Darien

Kenny Garth scores 15 in Clincher

The Central Falcon basketball program is no stranger to winning conference titles. They had won four of the last five (2016, 17, 19, 20). And the year they didn’t win conference (2018), they advanced all the way to the state tournament.

Now they have a three-peat, and have won five of the last six SLC titles, following Monday night’s 55-36 victory over Delavan-Darien.

Coach Hyllberg said of the conference championship, “It’s special every year. Every year is different. You come in to it, and it’s one-game-at-a-time, and grind it out. Last year we had to share it with Elkhorn, so this year, it was a goal to, if we could, to do it all by ourselves. So you got to give them credit, you know, it’s not easy to win 13 games in the conference, ever.

The Falcons play two tough games this week against Milton and Pewaukee. Coach Hyllberg is confident these non-conference match-ups will get his team battle-tested for a play-off run. “The Franklin game, we should have won. I thought we were right there, at the end. He hit that three-pointer at the end, and that’s a game we could’ve won. So, it gives our guys confidence that we can play with the bigger schools….. I think we can make a run this year. The one thing that hurts us in games is sometimes we get sloppy with the ball. And sometimes our shot selection isn’t good. So if we can take care of the ball and rebound and get hot, I think we can beat anyone. We competed well against St Cats. We were only down by five with about seven minutes left. So, against Franklin and St Cats, it just shows that if we meet their intensity, we can compete with anyone.

Junior guard, Kenny Garth, also believes this team can win this year. “I believe we can make a run. We just have to make sure we lock-in on defense, and don’t worry about scoring too much. We just got to make sure our defense is there. If our defense is there, then all we got to do is score one point and we win.”

Garth led all Falcons in scoring with 15 points. “I was trying to create for everyone else like I normally do. I just found some gaps for myself, and got some lay-ups.”
