Kitchen Cubes won the Bristol Progress Days Tournament from 2015-2019, but lost a tough game to Bar Blues in the 2020 championship a few weeks ago, on July 12th. McGinn was happy to get to play Bar Blues again.

The Kitchen Cubes’ roster has been thin this season while battling several injuries. They added Skora to the roster a few weeks ago, just in case he might be available after a tournament with another team. “We knew we wouldn’t get [Skora] until Saturday or Sunday, because he had another tournament up north. But we were slim all weekend with 9 guys. That’s why we had that 13-year-old out there running bases for us,” McGinn said. “[Bar Blues] flat out beat us in the morning. We had a bad first two innings, again. They got out in front and just kind of coasted. So, having Skora was a huge help for us to get some innings eaten.”

When asked what changed in the championship game with Bar Blues, McGinn said, “We played a clean game. We didn’t commit any errors. We had probably 4 or 5 in the first game, and that kind of opened the door for them to score on us. It was kind of our same 9 guys from Progress Days, so it was kind of nice to come back and get them.”

Paddock Lake’s Mike Skora on the Cubes pitching plan for the state championship game, “I think it was to feed the hot-hand who knows he can get a couple of outs early….. We had a lot of experience on our bench with our pitchers. If we ran into any trouble, we definitely had a good back-up plan.
Bristol’s Jeremy McGinn ropes this pitch for his second double in the state championship game. McGinn finished the game 2-for-3 with 3 RBI.
Jeremy McGinn pulls up at 2nd base in the state championship game on July 26th.
Bristol’s Jeremy McGinn gives a big high-five to starting pitcher Mike Skora (#7) after the final out of his complete game one-hitter in the state championship game at Hansen Park.
Paddock Lake’s Mike Skora is all smiles while playing first base in the semi-final game. Skora was dominant pitching in the state championship game = a complete game shutout, 1-hitter, with 9 strike-outs.

The plan was to pull Skora out once he got into some trouble. But the trouble never came, and he carried the Cubes, with a one-hit shutout in the state championship game.

Congratulations Kitchen Cubes!

There are still a few weeks remaining in the men’s league on Tuesdays and Fridays at Hansen Park in Bristol. Games start at 6:30 and 8pm.
