Falcon Boys Win Regional Semi-Final

The Central boys basketball team beat Milton 70-57 on Friday night. The win advances the Falcons to the sectional semi-final, at Elkhorn tonight at 7pm.

Central jumped out to an early lead. The Falcons had opportunities to get it to double-digits early, but missed several easy put-backs and got called for a couple illegal screens, so Milton kept hanging around.

The Red Hawks then got hot shooting late in the first half, and took a 38-34 lead into halftime. They came out hot to start the second half, and built the lead to 44-36.

Then Central head coach, James Hyllberg, called a timeout. “In the second half we switched the defense up a few times. We used a 3-2, then we went to the 1-3-1, and I think that kid of slowed up their guard a little bit.”

Within the next two minutes the Falcons would heat up themselves, and tie the game 44-44 with 13:32 remaining. With about seven minutes remaining, Central started to build a small lead. The Red hawks continued to throw up low percentage shots, and now were missing them, so they were digging themselves deeper and deeper into a hole. Central led 65-54 with 2:55 remaining in the game, and put it on cruise control from there.

Leading scorers:

  • Jack Rose (#24) ——– 24 points
  • Kenny Garth (#11) —– 13 points
  • Devin Griffin (#1) —– 12 points
  • Corey Hinze (#3) —– 9 points

The Falcons will only get about 22 hours of rest, and move on to the sectional semi-final vs Elkhorn, tonight, at 7pm. The winner of that game will face the winner of Waukesha West at Burlington in the sectional championship at Central on Thursday March 12th.

Shot blocking machine = Bradley Bell (#34) snags this rebound during warm-ups on Friday night. “I thought Bradley had a good second half. He’s long. He had 6 points. But he also alters a lot of shots in the paint as well. We’re going to need that tomorrow night, for sure,” said Hyllberg.
Coach Hyllberg on guard Corey Hinze (#3), “Corey is a guy that will take charges, and does the dirty-work. He’s a guy you can depend on every night for defense, for sure.” Hinze finished the game with 9 points on the offensive end.
Kenny Garth (#11) hits this early 3-pointer to put the Falcons up 10-5 in the first half. Central won the game and will face Elkhorn tonight in the sectional semi-final.
