Jr Panthers Win Super Bowl
Led by great offensive line play and a smothering defense, the featherweight WKC Jr Panthers shut out Zion 27-0 to win the TCYFL 3A Super Bowl at Carmel High School on Saturday night.
Coached by Brent Brenner, the featherweights have won back-to-back Super Bowls. This being the first Super Bowl in Jr Panther history, after winning the final Super Bowl in Bulldog history last year (back-to-back titles). The program switched names and colors during the off-season. Brenner has been coaching the WKC program since 2001, and has now won his 6th Super Bowl.
After losing to Zion in week 2, Coach Brenner knew he needed a big effort from his offensive line this week. So he brought in former Wisconsin Badger, Brian Jansen, to work with the featherweights all week. Jansen’s varsity squad was eliminated last Sunday at Lake Zurich, but he came out all week to work with the little guys. Coach Brenner said, ” He braved the cold and helped prepare our kids for the upcoming rematch with Zion, and it showed right away.”
Speaking of braving the cold, a skeleton crew of Jr Panther Cheerleaders showed up in the cold to support the team from pregame through the championship trophy presentation. The five rugged cheerleaders to brave the crisp 24 degree weather were: Rylie Depriest, Grace Urban, Taylor Gorsline, Eva Mulcahy, Makayla Frisby, and coach Ashley Schaufel.
The defense caused 7 fumbles. Coach Brenner credited big hits by Brock Griffin, Talon Volbrecht, Aiden Chapman, Leeland Glashagel, Tyler Hall, Jack Gartner. He said that the punishment by his defense “had Zion running backs not wanting to run the ball.”
Brenner added, “Defensive backs, Jax Kibler, Jacob Duffy, Sebastien Glashagel, made sure to shut down Zion’s passing game. Defensive Ends; Payton Grate, Zach Albrecht, Talon Volbrecht, and Casey Mulcahy, kept Zion from breaking one around the outside . Defensive lineman, Jack Dzierzanowski, Reggie Brent, Jonathon Rainey, Devan Grasso, Adymn Bergum, and Gavin Beaty dominated the line of scrimmage all night.
On the offensive line play, Breener said, “Reggie Brent, Wyatt High, Carson Zimmerman, Brock Griffin, Jonathon Rainey, Jack Dzierzanowski, Talon Volbrecht, and Aliya Corona did an unbelievable job making holes for our running backs. Despite the bitter cold, center Reggie Brent made sure every snap was good, and it helped us control the ball. Zion had seven fumbles, and we had only one.”
The featherweight team was coached by: Robert Brent, Bob Glashagel, Brian Scott, Tony Corona, Brian Griffin, Scott Hall, special guest Brian Jansen (this week), and team mom, Amy Richardson.
Great job boys!!!
